Yale Young African Scholars 2027
The Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) 2027 program is now open for applications from secondary school students across Africa. The program is designed for young students who want to prepare for university, improve their academic skills, and develop leadership abilities.
YYAS is run by Yale University and focuses on university preparation, career exploration, leadership, and financial aid guidance. Students also become part of a network of young leaders from across Africa.
The program is free to participate in. In 2027, students can apply for either an online College Prep Workshop or a Residential Leadership Summit in Rwanda. Students can only be admitted to one of these programs.
What Is the Yale Young African Scholars Program?
Yale Young African Scholars is an academic and enrichment program for African secondary school students preparing for higher education.
The program helps students understand the university application process and explore future career options. Participants also receive guidance about financial aid and develop skills that can support their future studies.
YYAS also gives students the chance to connect with other young people from different African countries. Yale gives preference to high-achieving, low-income students who have limited access to university guidance at their schools or in their communities.
Yale Young African Scholars 2027 Program Options
For 2027, YYAS offers two program options.
Online College Prep Workshop
The online workshop will take place from July 15 to July 20, 2027. It will last six days and is expected to admit around 240 students from countries across Africa.
Students will join online sessions using platforms such as Zoom. They will learn about career choices, university applications, and the transition from secondary school to university.
Students need reliable internet access and must be able to attend all program days. Those who complete the workshop will receive a YYAS Certificate of Completion. The online program is completely free.
Residential Leadership Summit
The Residential Leadership Summit will take place in Rwanda from August 7 to August 15, 2027. The nine-day program is expected to welcome around 110 students.
In addition to university preparation, students will learn about leadership, innovation, design, and 21st-century skills.
The residential program provides free accommodation, meals, and academic materials. A limited number of need-based travel grants are also available for admitted students who live outside Rwanda. Students remain responsible for travel documents such as passports and visas.

The program does not provide an undergraduate or graduate degree. Yale clearly states that YYAS is an academic and leadership preparation program rather than a university scholarship.
Who Can Apply?
Applicants must meet all of Yale's eligibility requirements.
To apply for YYAS 2027, students must:

Be 14 to 18 years old on July 15, 2027

Be able to study in English

Be a citizen or permanent resident of an African country

Refugees living in an African country may also apply

Currently attend school in an African country

Be in Grade 10 or Grade 11, or an international equivalent
Students must also meet the required graduation timeline. Students who are already in their final year of secondary school, have already graduated, or are currently university students cannot apply. YYAS and YYGS alumni are also not eligible to reapply for YYAS.

The teacher recommendation must come from a teacher who knows the student well. Recommendations from parents, relatives, family friends, or paid tutors and counsellors are not accepted.
How to Apply for Yale Young African Scholars 2027?
The YYAS application is submitted online. Students should first review the eligibility requirements and application components.
Applicants should then prepare their academic records, essays, activities information, and teacher recommendations. Students can review a sample application before starting the online form.

YYAS 2027 has two application deadlines.
