How is Life in University Dormitories for Students

If you are going abroad for education, you will most probably be living in your university’s dormitories. University dormitories are the Hall of Residence inside the campus. There can be more than one Hall of Residence depending on the number of enrolled students. Hall of Residence is a big building, may comprise more than 1 floors, with hundreds of rooms in it. Depending on the size of room there usually live from 2 to 4 students in a room.

Since StudyAbroad.pk has always tried to cover every confusion or question you may have about studying abroad, in this article I will be discussing about the residence while studying abroad. Today I am sharing with you what kind of life you will experience in university dormitories based on personal experience.

1 -   You Live Carefree:

In university dorm, you don’t very much have to care about anything. No problem of paying utilities, cleaning, furnishing or arranging. In university dorms, you usually only pay at the start of the year for the whole year and it includes all utilities including electricity and internet. There is a complete staff that manages all the chores of Hall and students don’t have to worry about anything. Likewise, you don’t have bring groceries like have to do at home. Since it is just one room and about 3 boy/girls will be living there, cleaning or rearranging won’t even an issue.

“The [dorm] setup does a good job of letting a student worry a bit less and focus more on school. There are plenty of people around for company, … and classes are just a short walk away. Just about everything a student needs for living is available” , says Simon, college freshman via [bigfuture].

2 -   Everything is Near You:

This is one of the best reasons to live in university dorms. In university dorms, you will find everything that you need in your reach and easily accessible. Since student Hall of Residence is inside the university campus, you don’t need any special transportation. Your department is inside the campus and on walking distance You also don’t have to go out to eat as there is no shortage of cafes in the campus and you also have the facility of mess. You also have libraries available in the university.

3 -   No Security Tension:

The most safe place for an international student in a foreign country is his/her university. Universities have their private security staff. In addition, every residence hall has its own security. You don’t have to worry about crimes, robbers or goons. This is definitely a blessing for girls. Hall of Residence for female students are particularly watched over by the university administration and have special security. You will see no boys near girls’ residence halls, they usually have walls around the building (it is in my university) and for inside matters you also have female security staff. However, you might watch out for thievery and keep your things locked.

4 -   There is Always Entertainment:

You can never get bored in student residence of hall. There are plenty of other students all of your age group. There is usually always something going on. There may be some gaming competition, or group study or other friends gathering. I remember, in my university dorms there was always someone playing music on speakers. You will find some comedians, some musician, singers or nerds that will always keep you entertained.

5 -   Living with Your Best Friends:

You know how you gather with friends have the best time hanging out with them but then you have to go home and you miss the time with friends. It is just like that and you don’t have to go home. You will be living with the best of your friends. Even if your current friends are not going with you, still you will see that you roommates will become one of your best friends. These friends are always with you and always there for you.

“If it weren't for my roommate, I would not have survived my first semester. Not only does she … wake me up for class, but she genuinely cares for me”, says Alison, college freshman via [bigfuture].

6 -   Group Study is Makes it Easier:

Since all your class fellows and friends will be living in the same building and most probably in the same neighborhood, group study will become a daily routine. Even if you don’t go to your neighbor room, your roommates are still there. You will be studying as a group and it is a great help in all your assignments, quizzes and exams. You will be teaching them something and they will be teaching you something.

7  -    Social Networking:

If you can make good connections with others by talking, you will make a great social network there. In professional life, there is nothing more beneficial than a great social network. Your seniors will also be in the same hall, try to keep a good relation with them and they will definitely be a big help for your specially at the start of your career.

8 -   Gaming Competitions:

I don’t know if you are a gaming fan but you will become one when you will start living in dormitories. Group gaming is the most fun thing. Me and my class fellows make local server for Counter Strike game, make teams and have competition. Even if you are not into video games, you can still play many other games like Ludo that is famous in Pakistan.

9 -   Mess Food is Not as Bad:

Mess food helps you save time and money. Mess is inside your hall so you don’t have to go out, it is cheaper and you don’t have to pay right away because it is billed monthly. Another advantage of the mess is that you don’t have to make decision three times a day about what you should eat as it is decided by the mess authorities. People say mess food is not good but I will have to disagree. You are not bound to eat at mess. Mess charges you per meal and if you won’t eat at mess they will go in loss. In the mess of my university hall, they always tried to make something that students like.

10 -   You will Remember it Your Whole Life:

Dorms will become like your second home. Living there for 2 to 4 years will really make you fall for them. All alumni say that the thing they miss most are the university dorms. You do go to university, department and cafes with many friends and have fun  but the most time is spent in dorms where you have your best friends. You will have fights, you will have disagreements but they will always be there for you.

When you will enter your professional life where you spend most of the time at job and then worrying about family; these memories will be only thing to put a smile on your face. The fun, the gaming and the fights you had, the borrowing of money, the sharing of clothes, shoes, perfumes and even the soap and shampoo; these will be your best and last memories even at deathbed.
