Key Changes for International Students & Providers - UK

Post-Study Graduate Visa Reduced to 18 Months

The Standard Graduate Route will be shortened from 2 years to 18 months for graduates of undergraduate and master’s programs.

PhD graduates are expected to keep the 3-year pathway, but awaiting official changes from the Home Office.

Changes are anticipated for students beginning in January 2026, whereas those starting in Autumn 2025 will probably keep the 24-month pathway.

6% Charge for International Students

A 6% tax on tuition fees for international students will be implemented—universities are required to cover it, not the students themselves. Funds will enhance education and skills in the UK.

Certain universities caution that this might be transmitted to students, possibly raising expenses.

Tighter Adherence Standards

Sponsoring organizations encounter more stringent Basic Compliance Assessment (BCA):

International student enrollment ≥ 95% (increased from 90%)

Completion of the course must be at least 90% (increased from 85%)

Visa rejection ≤ 5% (reduced from 10%)

A public Red-Amber-Green rating system will indicate sponsor performance. Underperformers might encounter limits or the loss of their licenses.

The Agent Quality Framework (AQF) is required for organizations that hire through agents.

English Language Proficiency Criteria

Adult dependants of students are required to fulfill the CEFR A1 level at the time of visa application, with higher levels needed for extension and settlement.

A wider improvement in English skills is relevant for both employment and immigration pathways.
