Matsumae International Foundation Research Fellowship 2026 | Research in Japan

The Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) is now taking applications for its Research Fellowship Program 2026. This is a great chance for researchers from around the world to get fully funded research opportunities in Japan. The fellowship covers a monthly stipend, travel expenses, and health insurance, so you can focus on your work at leading Japanese institutions. Scholarship Details

Chosen fellows will get:

• A monthly allowance of JPY 220,000 for research and living costs.
• A one-time arrival payment of JPY 120,000 to help with settling in.
• A round-trip flight (economy class) from their home country to Japan.
• Travel insurance that covers medical expenses and death benefits.
• A trip around Japan to learn about the culture and technology, which will support their research.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply, you need to:

• Be a non-Japanese citizen.
• Have a Ph.D. when you apply.
• Be 45 or younger (born in or after 1980).
• Prove you can speak English or Japanese.
• Get acceptance from a host institution in Japan before applying.
• Not have lived in Japan for a long time, except for short trips for conferences or tourism.
• Be working in your home country and plan to come back after the fellowship to help with national development.
