What is the Tokyo Biennale Social Dive?

The Tokyo Biennale is an exciting art event known for its bold and unique exhibitions that push the boundaries of contemporary art. In 2025, they’re launching a new program called the Social Dive Residency. This will give selected artists a chance to explore the theme Shall we 'Sanpo'? Through a series of art walks.

Sanpo means walking or wandering in Japanese, and this will be the main focus of the residency. Artists will immerse themselves in different Tokyo neighborhoods, walking around and connecting with the community to create new artwork inspired by these experiences.

The Tokyo Biennale Social Dive Residency is totally free for participants. Here’s what they offer:

• Round-trip Airfare: They’ll cover up to ¥300,000 for flights to Tokyo.
• Accommodation: You’ll get free lodging for the whole residency.
• Honorarium: You'll receive a ¥100,000 grant to recognize your work.
• Project Funding: If you need materials or help with development, you can get up to ¥200,000.
• Language Support: They provide interpreters and translators to help you communicate with locals.

Eligibility Criteria

• Anyone from any country can join the program.
• Artists living outside of Japan are welcome.
• You need to be 18 or older to participate.
• If you're chosen, you'll need to show your artwork at the Tokyo Biennale opening on October 17, 2025.
