How do borders impact the different spaces we live in—like physical places, social settings, or even online? With technology, politics, and climate change constantly changing the game, Border Lab wants you to dive into the idea of "border(ring)s" in its 2025 essay contest. This isn't just a writing contest; it's an opportunity to rethink how borders work in our complex world.
Why "Border(ring)s"?
Borders today aren't just straight lines on a map anymore. People are now active in places like the deep sea, high up in the atmosphere, the Arctic, and even outer space. At the same time, data moves around easily online. But a lot of our political and social systems still stick to old ideas about territory.
The 2025 Border Lab Essay Contest invites writers to think about this struggle. How are traditional borders working out in a time when movement and technology are changing things? What new types of control and power are showing up? How can we picture different possibilities?
