2026 Missouri Studies Fellowships | $5,000 Research Grant by SHSMO USA

The State Historical Society of Missouri (SHSMO) is currently accepting applications for the 2026 Center for Missouri Studies Fellowships. This initiative supports unique research into lesser-known aspects of Missouri's history and culture. It is accessible to both academic and independent researchers and provides a $5,000 reward for writing a scholarly essay of about 8,000 to 10,000 words.
According to SHSMO Executive Director Gary Kremer, these fellowships urge us to focus on the valuable lessons we can gain by looking at our past in new ways, such as investigating the connections between business and sociology or history and science.

Fellowship Goals

The Center for Missouri Studies provides fellowships with a clear purposes and goals:

• Encourage original study on Missouri's past.
• Encourage transdisciplinary scholarship.
• Highlight lesser-known histories, such as connections of politics, commerce, culture, science, and society in Missouri.

The essays must include extensive use of primary sources, a thorough understanding of relevant secondary literature, and proper academic citation according to The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th Edition.

Fellowship Details

Eligibility Criteria

• Available to both academic and independent scholars.
• There are no limits based on nationality, age, or academic ranking.
• Research must concentrate on Missouri's history or culture.
