Fellowship Overview
The Asia in the World Fellowship is a one-year postdoctoral opportunity designed to support scholars exploring Asia’s connections with the wider world. The phases of program are:
Phase 1 – Leiden (October 2026 – March 2027)
Fellows begin their journey at the IIAS office in Leiden, participating in seminars, academic writing, podcast production, and collaborative activities with scholars worldwide.
Phase 2 – International Partner Institute (3 to 5 months)
Fellows then move to a selected co-host institution in Asia, Africa, Latin America, or Europe. Partners include top institutes in countries like Thailand, India, Tanzania, Argentina, and more.
Phase 3 – Return to Leiden (Final Months)
The final phase brings the fellows back to Leiden for reflective engagement and a public event to showcase their research outcomes.
Eligibility Criteria
The applicants must:
- Hold a PhD or be scheduled to defend by February 15, 2026.
- Be available full-time between October 2026 and October 2027.
- During the program, you should not have any other employment or fellowship commitments
- Submit a research proposal that aligns with IIAS themes.
Pakistani nationals are eligible and encouraged to apply, particularly those with backgrounds in social sciences, cultural studies, history, urban studies, or arts and heritage.
