
The Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) is presently accepting applications for its Research Fellowship Program for 2026. This is a great chance for young researchers from outside Japan to work on advanced projects in Japan. The program seeks to encourage collaboration and support academic growth worldwide.
About the Fellowship
Founded in 1979 by Dr. Shigeyoshi Matsumae, the MIF Fellowship aims to build international goodwill through academic exchange. It brings researchers from all over the globe to Japan for research activities, helping to foster understanding and promote peace.

Eligibility Criteria
- Be of non-Japanese nationality.
- Have a Ph.D. (Doctoral degree) at the time of application.
- Be 45 or younger on June 30, 2025 (born in or after 1980).
- Proficient in either English or Japanese.
- Obtain an admission letter from a host institution in Japan before applying.
- Not having prior or present experience staying in Japan (except short-term trips for sightseeing or conferences).
- Have a job in their home country and plan to return after the fellowship to contribute to its growth.
Financial Support
- Monthly allowance of JPY 220,000 covers living expenditures and research expenses.
- Arrival Fund: JPY 120,000 for initial living costs.
- Round-trip Airfare: Economy ticket from the nearest international airport to your home to Tokyo, Japan.
- Insurance: Coverage for overseas travel, including medical treatment and death benefits.
- Study Tour: A guided tour to help you learn more about Japan’s culture and history.
