About the Fellowship
The Safe Haven Fellowship at NIAS allows scholars and cultural figures at risk to continue their work within a secure academic surrounding that provides support. Started because of the Ukraine conflict, the fellowship now accepts applications from people in any country facing turmoil or oppression. This includes places like Gaza, Sudan, Haiti, and Pakistan.

Eligibility Criteria
The fellowship is open to a variety of professionals, including:
Scholars who have completed at least three years of postdoctoral research in the humanities or social sciences.
Writers, journalists, and artists who can demonstrate similar professional experience while not having a PhD.
Applicants must offer comprehensive documentation demonstrating how war, political pressure, or repression have disrupted or threatened their work.
Working proficiency in English is required.
Individuals must not be linked with any entities sanctioned by the Dutch government.
Fellowship Benefits
Fellows chosen for the program will get support that includes:
A monthly payment between €2,500 and €3,500, which will depend on the specifics of their project and their personal situation.
Housing in Amsterdam that is either free or reduced in price, or a travel payment if they live outside of Amsterdam.
Reimbursement for round-trip airfare.
Workspace, entry to academic materials and libraries, and involvement in NIAS academic events.
Daily group lunches to encourage discussion with other scholars.
Complete involvement in the NIAS interdisciplinary group.
