
For mid-career experts interested in marine governance, international law, and sustainable ocean growth, applications are open for the 2026 United Nations – Nippon Foundation Fellowship. This program is fully funded and aims to expand the knowledge of government officials and professionals from developing nations in Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea.
Fellowship Objectives
The program is designed to:
- Build people's ability to help govern oceans and put UNCLOS into action.
- Help create complete national plans for ocean issues.
- Make institutions stronger so they can manage marine resources in a way that lasts.
- Support the UN Sustainable Development Goal 14 about ocean conservation.

Who Can Apply?
Participants should:
- Be aged 25-45.
- Hold at least a bachelor's degree.
- Be mid-career professionals in government or NGOs related to ocean issues or maritime law.
- Have direct roles in policy, marine science, or legal areas.
- Plan to go back to their country and help develop national ocean policy.
- Send in a research idea related to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
