fellowship program
Selected courses offered by the university
Are you a dedicated mathematics student from a developing country with aspirations to excel in research and academia? The IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowship 2026 is a remarkable opportunity designed just for you. Supported by the International Mathematical Union (IMU) and Friends of IMU, this prestigious fellowship helps talented students pursue a doctoral degree in mathematical sciences with generous financial support.
The IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowship Program is a fully funded scholarship that supports outstanding candidates from developing countries who are pursuing or planning to pursue a PhD in mathematics at a recognized university or research centre in a developing country. Rather than accepting direct applications from students, the program operates on a nomination basis, where professional mathematicians nominate highly motivated candidates.
Selected candidates receive annual funding of up to USD 10,000 for up to four years or until the completion of their doctoral degree (whichever comes first). The fellowship can cover:
Tuition fees
Travel expenses to the institution
Housing and basic living costs
Academic research expenses (when applicable)
This financial support allows recipients to focus fully on their research without the burden of financial constraints — making it one of the most supportive PhD opportunities for developing country students.
To be considered for the fellowship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
Be a citizen and resident of a developing country as defined by IMU.
Be accepted or pre‑accepted into a PhD program in a recognized university or research institution located in a developing country, or currently enrolled in such a program.
Demonstrate a strong academic track record and passion for research and teaching in mathematics.
Nomination requirement: Only professional mathematicians with a PhD are eligible to nominate candidates. Students cannot apply directly.
There is no age limit, and nominations of women students are strongly encouraged.
Since this fellowship is nomination based, students must be put forward by a professional mathematician — typically a mentor, advisor, or professor — who believes in their potential. To complete the nomination, the following documents are usually required:
Letter of nomination from a professional mathematician
Two letters of recommendation
Student’s CV
Research proposal and motivation letter
PhD admission or pre‑acceptance letter
Academic transcripts
PhD supervisor CV and project details (if applicable)
All materials must be submitted online in PDF format before the application deadline.
Nomination Open: Early 2026
Deadline: May 31, 2026 (23:59 CET)
Start of Fellowship: Typically aligned with Fall/Winter academic terms
The IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowship is more than a scholarship — it’s a chance to become part of a global community of mathematicians dedicated to solving complex problems and advancing knowledge. With financial support, mentorship, and a strong academic network, recipients are well equipped to build successful careers in research and higher education.
