The IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowship Program is a fully funded scholarship that supports outstanding candidates from developing countries who are pursuing or planning to pursue a PhD in mathematics at a recognized university or research centre in a developing country. Rather than accepting direct applications from students, the program operates on a nomination basis, where professional mathematicians nominate highly motivated candidates.

Scholarship Benefits

Selected candidates receive annual funding of up to USD 10,000 for up to four years or until the completion of their doctoral degree (whichever comes first). The fellowship can cover:

• Tuition fees

• Travel expenses to the institution

• Housing and basic living costs

Eligibility Criteria

• Nomination requirement: Only professional mathematicians with a PhD are eligible to nominate candidates. Students cannot apply directly.

• There is no age limit, and nominations of women students are strongly encouraged.

How to Apply

Since this fellowship is nomination based, students must be put forward by a professional mathematician — typically a mentor, advisor, or professor — who believes in their potential. To complete the nomination, the following documents are usually required:

• Letter of nomination from a professional mathematician

• Two letters of recommendation

• Student’s CV

• Research proposal and motivation letter

• PhD admission or pre‑acceptance letter

• Academic transcripts

• PhD supervisor CV and project details (if applicable)
