The Provost's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program is a university-wide initiative established by the University of Notre Dame to support exceptional early-career researchers. The programme provides scholars with an opportunity to conduct independent research while working in an interdisciplinary academic environment.
For the 2027–2029 cohort, the College of Arts & Letters will host eight fellows across participating departments, institutes, and programmes. These include areas such as Art, Art History and Design, English, Philosophy, Theology, and the Initiative on Race and Resilience.
The fellowship is intended to help scholars strengthen their research agendas while developing skills in academic publishing, grant writing, teaching, communication, and professional development.
The fellowship provides a strong financial package for selected postdoctoral scholars. Each fellow receives an annual salary of $75,000 and an additional $15,000 per year for research-related expenses, professional training, and scholarly activities.
Over the two-year appointment, this represents up to $150,000 in salary and $30,000 in additional research and professional development support.
Fellows also receive faculty mentorship, office space through their hosting unit, and opportunities to participate in interdisciplinary lectures, colloquia, panel discussions, and other academic activities. The programme also provides professional development in areas such as research, publishing, grant writing, and teaching.
The Notre Dame Provost Fellowship is open to scholars of all nationalities. Applicants must have completed, or plan to complete, a doctoral degree between June 2024 and June 2027. Candidates who expect to complete their PhD by June 2027 may therefore apply.
Applicants may apply whether or not they currently hold a permanent full-time research or teaching position. However, current postdoctoral scholars at the University of Notre Dame, current Notre Dame doctoral candidates, and Notre Dame graduates are not eligible for this fellowship.
Earlier doctoral completion may be considered in certain circumstances involving qualifying maternity, paternity, or Family and Medical Leave Act leave during the previous two years.
The fellowship is offered through the College of Arts & Letters and supports research across participating departments, institutes, and programmes. The 2027–2029 cohort includes opportunities connected with areas such as English, Philosophy, Theology, Art, Art History and Design, and Race and Resilience, among other participating units.
The University encourages applicants whose research connects with broader interdisciplinary questions and Notre Dame's strategic initiatives. Applicants should carefully review the participating hosting units and identify the academic environment that best fits their proposed research.
Applicants must prepare a complete academic application through the Interfolio system. The application requires a cover letter of no more than four pages, a curriculum vitae, a research statement of no more than five pages, and a writing sample of no more than 10,000 words.
Applicants must also arrange at least three letters of recommendation. Recommendation letters must be submitted through Interfolio rather than sent directly to the University.
The research statement is particularly important because candidates should identify potential faculty mentors and explain how their research fits within the relevant hosting unit. Applicants are advised not to contact potential faculty mentors before submitting an application.
Applicants should first review the participating College of Arts & Letters departments and determine where their proposed research would fit best. They should then prepare the required cover letter, CV, research statement, writing sample, and recommendation requests.
The complete application must be submitted through the Interfolio Faculty Search system. Applicants should make sure that all recommendation letters are received before the deadline.
The application deadline is December 1, 2026, at 11:59 PM Eastern Time.
